HAY - Grain - HAY
THROW HAY FIRST!
Preferred feeding routine: Allow horses to graze on hay for 10-15 minutes before throwing grain.
Chewing hay produces saliva which helps to buffer stomach acid.
Slowing movement of grain into the small intestine aids digestion.
Benefits of HAY - GRAIN - HAY feeding routine:
- Buffering stomach acid reduces the risk of ulcers.
- Slow digestion to absorb optimum nutrients from grain.
- Reduces “bolting” grain tendency that can lead to choking.
REMINDER: A horse’s stomach acids are continuously active, therefore access to forage at least 18 hours per day is recommended as consistent long periods without grazing can cause ulcers.
